5 Diabetes Myths To Stop Believing

Everyone has heard about diabetes, but many don’t know what is important to know when it comes to diabetes. For that reason, we wanted to share 5 myths about diabetes that you may or may not know.

  1. All overweight people develop type 2 diabetes – That is simply false. There tends to be the thought that being overweight is a guarantor of diabetes, but that’s not the case.
  2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by poor health – The ADA reports that type 1 diabetes, which is less common, is caused by genetics and unknown factors.
  3. Being overweight is the only risk factor for type 2 diabetes – Being overweight, having an unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity can contribute to you having type 2 diabetes, but it’s not the only risk factor. Family history, blood pressure and ethnicity are a couple of the other factors.
  4. Prediabetes means diabetes – False. Just because prediabetes is a precursor to diabetes, it doesn’t mean it’s a given. If detected early enough, blood glucose levels can be returned to normal.
  5. Untreated diabetes only affects your blood sugar – False. When your body cannot produce the insulin needed to keep your blood glucose levels normal, it can impact your eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
