Preventing Diabetes After A Prediabetes Diagnosis

If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes it’s definitely a wake up call, but it does not mean you are doomed to get diabetes.

WebMD offers these tips to help prevent diabetes after a prediabetes diagnosis:

  • Move more – Becoming more active is one of the best things you can do to make diabetes less likely
  • Lower your weight – Losing weight can help prevent diabetes. In one study, people who lost 5%-7% of their body weight reduced the likelihood of diabetes by 58%.
  • Visit your doctor – Seeing your doctor more frequently can be a positive encouragement for your journey.
  • Eat better – More vegetables (like broccoli, spinach and carrots), more high fiber foods, fruits in moderation, and whole grain foods instead of processed grains. Cutting out sodas and high calorie foods can help as well.
  • Prioritize sleep – Not getting enough sleep regularly can make it harder for your body to lose weight. Also, not getting enough sleep can make it harder for your body to use insulin effectively.
  • Get support – Don’t go the journey alone. Use friends, family or join a group to help motivate you and keep you on track your goals.
  • Choose and commit – Have the right mindset. Commit to making better choices for yourself daily. Those changes add up.
