EVMS Spotlight: Eileen Althouse – Diabetes Educator

Eileen Althouse EVMS Strelitz Diabetes CenterEileen’s role with Eastern Virginia Medical School is as the diabetes educator. She has been with the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center since the Center’s founding over 20 years ago. She is a Registered Nurse, Licensed Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Certified Diabetes Educator. Eileen received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing form the University of Delaware and her Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia. She has served as an officer on the Board of Eastern Virginia Association of Diabetes Educators and is a long standing member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. She works as the Program Coordinator for the Center’s Diabetes Self Management Education Program. This program has had ADA Recognition since 1995. Eileen provides individualized counseling on living with diabetes and teaches group classes as well. These sessions focus on motivating people with diabetes to improve their lifestyle by controlling their diabetes with nutrition, exercise, medication and stress management. Eileen has dedicated her nursing career to assisting people with diabetes improve their overall health and incorporate diabetes self care into their lives. She believes an educated patient will live a longer and healthier life.
