Could Gene Therapy Cure Diabetes?

In a recent article by the Los Angeles Times, researchers have shown that a single infusion of a virus containing two handpicked genes restored normal blood sugar levels in mice with Type 1 diabetes.  This is great news as diabetes is on the rise in the US.

While the results were not permanent, the mice returned to their diabetic state after 4 months. It is believed that the improvement could last several years with humans. Meaning, that those with Type 1 diabetes could possibly only have to receive an injection every couple of years to regulate their insulin production.
